The Power of Purpose Since 1920

The early 1920s marked a transformative period in American history. The rise of the Harlem Renaissance amplified the voices of Black artists, writers, and intellectuals, while the nation experienced significant social and political shifts. During this time, the Ku Klux Klan was active, Volstead Act ushered in Prohibition, and the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution granted women the right to vote.

Amid this complex landscape, five visionary coeds—Arizona Cleaver Stemons, Pearl Anna Neal, Myrtle Tyler Faithful, Viola Tyler Goings, and Fannie Pettie Watts—set out to create a sorority unlike any other. Their vision was rooted in Scholarship, Service, Sisterhood, and Finer Womanhood. They were committed to confronting societal challenges, raising awareness of issues impacting the Black community, and promoting academic excellence. Most importantly, they sought to build an organization grounded in purpose—one that prioritized the betterment of humanity over elitism and social status.

From these humble beginnings, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Sorority, Incorporated has grown into a global organization of more than 100,000 members, with hundreds of chapters worldwide. Zeta has remained a trailblazer, achieving numerous firsts among Black Greek-letter organizations, including establishing a national headquarters, chartering a chapter in Africa, forming auxiliary groups, and constitutionally bonding with Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Fraternity, Incorporated.

As we continue into our second century of service, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated remains steadfast in its founding principles. We continue to raise the standard for academic excellence and community impact, empowering our members to lead, serve, and uplift in every field of endeavor.
